As part of the global efforts to reduce smoking, Korea implemented national tobacco control policies in 1995 that have been continuously expanded and strengthened.5 Nevertheless, the daily smoking rate for men in Korea substantially exceeds the global median of daily smoking rates determined by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) for populations aged 15 years and older.6 Studies have consistently highlighted the significant disease burden associated with smoking in Korea.5,7,8,9 In 2021, lung cancer was the most prevalent newly diagnosed cancer in Korean men and the fourth most common new cancer in women.10 Smoking was a significant factor contributing to overall mortality, cancer mortality (all types), and especially lung cancer mortality among Koreans.11 Given the consistently high smoking rates, the severity of associated health consequences, and the substantial socioeconomic burden, prioritizing the cessation and prevention of tobacco use in Korea is crucial for public health authorities in the country
